In response to Rahul Gandhi Naming Congress Chief Before Results, Party Defends
New Delhi: Congressman Jairam Ramesh supported Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday for designating seasoned leader Mallikarjun Kharge as the new Congress president before the results of the party election were made public. Mr. Ramesh criticised "erroneous media reporting" regarding Mr. Gandhi's comment, saying that the voting direction was obvious at the time the comment was made during the news conference.
"What my function will be will be decided by the future president. Speak with Kharge and Sonia, "When asked about his position inside the party, Rahul Gandhi responded.
The remarks were delivered by Rahul Gandhi during a press conference at around 1:30 pm, when the counting was taking place. Rahul Gandhi led the party's "Bharat Jodo Yatra" into Andhra Pradesh. Results weren't announced until after 2:00 PM.
Regarding what the next president will do while serving as the party's public face, Rahul Gandhi stated, "I can't comment on the role of the Congress president; that's for Mr. Kharge to remark on." "As far as my duty is concerned, I am pretty clear. Ask Kharge ji and Sonia ji about it; the president will decide what my function is and how I will be used."
"The Congress president is the party's supreme authority. And a new Congress president will be in office. And he will determine exactly how the celebration proceeds "Added he.
An ardent supporter of the Gandhi family, Mallikarjun Kharge, 80, was largely regarded as the front-runner even before the ballots were cast on October 17 to elect the Congress' first non-Gandhi chief in more than 20 years. Senior party figures, including Ashok Gehlot, the chief minister of Rajasthan and the Gandhis' initial pick, were said to endorse Mr. Kharge.
Shashi Tharoor, Mr. Kharge's opponent, has lamented "bias" and "an unequal playing field" in the lead-up to the polls. As ballots were being counted in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress MP from Kerala claimed "very serious irregularities" and urged that the results be thrown out. Team Tharoor stated, "We did not enter this election to accept business as usual."
The election was proclaimed to be won by Mallikarjun Kharge. According to Madhusudan Mistry, chairman of the party's Central Election Committee (CEC), there were 9,385 total votes cast, of which Mr. Kharge received 7,897 and Mr. Tharoor received 1,072. For the first time in 24 years, the head of the Congress party is not a member of the Nehru-Gandhi clan.
